THE MISSION

‘More than 2,000 years ago Euripides’ Electra asked, “How should I begin my accusation? How should I end it? What should go in the middle?” In this era of euphemism and empty rhetoric, an era in which it is considered better form to spare everyone’s feelings than to call things by their real names, the cry of Agamemnon’s daughter has lost none of its relevance.
To accuse. Denounce. Provoke. Disturb. Isn’t this the true role of theater?’

What is Loka Maer?

LOKA MAER is a new theater company emerging out of the throes of Ecole Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq—a school for the dynamic study of space and rhythm through movement and drama; encompassing classic styles such as commedia dell'arte, clown, mask and melodrama, as well as exploring new forms of theater. Venturing forward on this path, LOKA MAER is dedicated to exploring and developing the imaginative language of contemporary physical theater.

LOKA MAER wishes to celebrate life in its complexity of anguish and joy; to celebrate our rich culture in its multifarious diversity yet transcend the limitations imposed by the label of ‘ethnicity’ to touch the universal human experience. Thus, Loka Maer is infused with the Nordic spirit of its creator—yet speaks to all humanity.

‘[S]alvation [of theater] at the beginning of this third millennium will come from those small voices being raised in all corners of the world, censuring injustice and—in keeping with the very foundations of theater—extracting the essence of the human being, distilling and transposing it in order to share it with the whole world.’
